Two Battersea schools deliver ambitious programme to inspire learners

A primary school and an independent secondary school in Battersea have been collaborating on an ambitious educational programme.

Westbridge Academy, a primary academy part of STEP Academy Trust, and Emanuel School, have embarked on the Primary Ambitions Programme for a second year running. The programme, which is delivered by sixth form students and staff from Emanuel School is a fantastic opportunity for primary pupils to learn new and exciting skills. There are a range of modules taught by Emanual School students, including powerful performance poetry, exploring tropical rainforests and Greek and Roman Gods, Myths and History.

During the autumn term, Westbridge Academy pupils have been learning about robotics and gaming. The robotics module has allowed pupils to develop problem solving and creativity skills through coding interactive games in Scratch and programming a variety of robots to solve tasks. Pupils were delighted when their robots started completing tasks and taking directions, reaching a great sense of achievement.

Next term pupils will have the opportunity to get on the decks during the introduction to DJing module. They will be given an introduction into DDJ-200 and Rekordbox, learn the structure of tracks and how to match the beats of different pieces of music. Pupils are also gearing up for a swimming module later in the year, to develop stroke techniques and feel more confident in the water.

The Primary Ambitions Programme has been fantastically successful in Westbridge Academy’s second year on the course. Pupils have gained great insights into a range of topics and the chance to learn from Emanuel School students has helped grow their confidence and curiosity.

Mike McNally, Head Teacher at Westbridge Academy, said: “We were delighted to continue to Primary Ambitions Programme with Emanuel School. The incredible modules on offer are fantastic opportunities for pupils to gain new experiences and skills and learn about fascinating topics, from robotics to DJing.

“I want to say a huge thank you to staff at Westbridge Academy and Emanuel School, as well as students at Emanuel School, for working hard to ensure our pupils can access this wonderful offer.”
