Mathematics at Westbridge

At Westbridge, we want every child to develop a deep and lasting understanding of mathematics. Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that learning builds step by step, enabling pupils to feel confident and secure in their knowledge rather than relying on rote procedures.

We structure learning through:

  • Small steps of learning – concepts are introduced in clear, manageable stages so that every child can progress with confidence.
  • Concrete, pictorial and abstract methods (CPA) – pupils use practical resources, then visual models, before moving on to abstract symbols, helping them build strong mental images and deepen their conceptual understanding.
  • Fluency, reasoning and problem-solving – children practise key facts until they are fluent, explain and justify their thinking to develop reasoning, and apply their understanding to both familiar and unfamiliar problems.

Collaborative learning is central to our approach. Pupils are encouraged to share, discuss and challenge ideas with one another, which strengthens reasoning and deepens understanding. This reflects our values of Passion, Urgency, Positivity, Aspiration and Commitment (PUPAC). We believe there is a difference between not knowing and not knowing yet — every child at Westbridge is supported to approach challenges with curiosity, resilience and ambition.
